MIDLOTHIAN, TX – A police pursuit involving a stolen vehicle ended in tragedy Friday afternoon when the fleeing driver crashed head-on into another vehicle, killing both drivers and sparking questions about law enforcement pursuit protocols.

According to Midlothian police, the chase began after a white van, reported stolen from Waxahachie, was located and pursued along Highway 287. The suspect, whose identity has not yet been publicly released, refused to stop for officers and continued to drive recklessly, prompting police to give chase.

The pursuit came to a devastating end near Plainview Road, where the stolen van collided head-on with a pickup truck. The impact caused a fiery explosion that engulfed both vehicles. Emergency crews arrived swiftly but were unable to save either driver.

The driver of the pickup truck was identified as 18-year-old Garrett Blake Tolliver of Morgan, Texas. Tolliver was reportedly on his way home from work when the crash occurred. His family, now grieving an unimaginable loss, has raised concerns about whether the chase was necessary—particularly because the van was equipped with a GPS tracking device that could have led to a less dangerous apprehension.

“Our son was just coming home from work. He wasn’t supposed to die that day,” said a family member in a statement to local media. “We understand the need for justice, but at what cost?”

The Midlothian Police Department confirmed that the Texas Department of Public Safety is assisting with the investigation. While police defend the actions taken during the chase, citing the immediate threat posed by the suspect’s driving, they acknowledged that the situation is under review.

The crash has reignited debate over police pursuit policies, especially in non-violent crimes such as vehicle theft. Critics argue that the potential danger to the public often outweighs the need for immediate capture.

In the wake of the tragedy, Tolliver’s family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses and raise awareness about safer police chase alternatives.

As investigations continue, the community mourns the loss of two lives and grapples with the complexities of justice, safety, and accountability. Further updates are expected as authorities release more details.
